What’s with Whitworth’s break schedule?

We’ve heard questions from a handful of families, both on Facebook and in person, and thought it could be helpful to give you some scheduling context from the Office of the Registrar.

FALL BREAK: Whitworth schedules a faculty development day so that faculty as a whole have the chance to participate in a learning opportunity specially designed for them. The timing of mid-term exams is not related to the timing of fall break.  In the past, Whitworth has seen that both faculty and students benefit from having a short break, even if that break does not include travel home.

SPRING BREAK: The timing of spring break has to do with academics.  We schedule it so that if falls after the seventh week of the term.  Mid-term grades are due on Friday of that seventh week and 2nd half semester classes start on Monday following spring break.  While this sometimes fits well with the Good Friday holiday that Whitworth observes, sometimes it doesn’t align well.
